Walter White

Walter White grew up in a musical family near Detroit, MI which inspired him to begin his musical career. Walter learned to play the baritone horn and tuba before settling on trumpet by age nine. Trained at Interlochen Center For the Arts, The Juilliard School, the University of Miami, and The Banff Centre, Walter’s former teachers include William Vacchiano, John Lindenau, Vincent Cichowicz, Mel Broiles, Leon Rapier, Carmine Caruso, Jerome Amend, and Kenny Wheeler.

Walter White’s illustrious career in music is a testament to his extraordinary talent, dedication, and versatility as a trumpet player, composer, arranger, and educator. Growing up in a musical family near Detroit, Michigan, Walter’s passion for music was ignited early on, leading him to master multiple instruments before settling on the trumpet at the age of nine. His formal training at some of the most prestigious institutions, including Interlochen Center for the Arts, The Juilliard School, the University of Miami, and The Banff Centre, equipped him with the skills and knowledge that would shape his future success.

Walter’s trumpet playing, known for its expressiveness and technical prowess, has led him to collaborate with some of the biggest names in music across various genres. His impressive list of collaborators includes legends like Bob James, Dave Holland, the Mingus Big Band, the Woody Herman Orchestra, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Gunther Schuller, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. He has also worked with The Jaco Pastorius Big Band and Arturo Sandoval, among others. Notably, Walter’s work with David Matthews’ Manhattan Jazz Orchestra resulted in seven award-winning recordings for the Japanese market.

One of the highlights of Walter’s career was his collaboration with his boyhood hero, Maynard Ferguson, during the early 1990s. Walter toured and recorded with Ferguson, and their dynamic duet on “The Fox Hunt,” captured on the CD Live from London, stands as a testament to his exceptional trumpet-playing skills.

Currently, Walter leads the Walter White Jazz Quartet and his 11-piece big band, Walter White & Small Medium @ Large. Their album, Breaking Good, garnered significant national attention, reaching the top 20 on the Jazz Week charts. The band has performed at prestigious events, including opening for Pat Metheny at the 2012 Detroit Jazz Festival and being featured at the 2013 International Trumpet Guild Conference.

In addition to his performance career, Walter has made significant contributions to the music industry as a composer, arranger, and producer. His work spans a wide range of media, from records and television to film, including soundtracks for popular sitcoms like TAXI and The Cosby Show. As the owner of a recording studio, Walter produces music for various projects, including his well-known Walter White Long-tone Accompaniment, a play-along CD for music practice now in its third printing, with Volume 2 released in 2018.

Walter’s compositional work includes original pieces for big bands, jazz ensembles, choirs, woodwind quartets, and brass ensembles. His arrangements of the American Songbook for Symphonic Pops have become audience favorites, showcasing his ability to blend tradition with innovation.

Beyond his performance and recording achievements, Walter is a dedicated educator, sharing his knowledge and expertise with the next generation of musicians. He teaches privately, holds master classes at music schools across the country and internationally, and frequently serves as a guest soloist with leading university jazz ensembles. His work as an artist-in-residence at institutions like Rutgers University, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Tulsa University further underscores his commitment to music education.
